DORDOGNE

History, terroir and exceptional landscapes

With its prehistoric caves, listed villages, south-western gastronomy and peaceful landscapes, the Dordogne embodies French authenticity: a region rich in flavour, history and a gentle way of life.

Discover the Dordogne

At the heart of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, the Dordogne (formerly known as Périgord) is one of France's richest départements in terms of heritage, nature and gastronomy. Renowned for its picturesque villages, châteaux, prehistoric caves and local cuisine, it embodies the French art de vivre in all its generosity.

A land of history and prehistory

The Dordogne is a veritable open-air museum:

  • The Vézère valley, nicknamed the "Valley of Man", is packed with prehistoric sites (including the famous Lascaux cave).
  • More than 1,000 châteaux and manor houses dot the region, including Beynac, Castelnaud, Hautefort and Losse.
  • Medieval bastides such as Domme, Monpazier and Belvès bear witness to a rich past.

A unique heritage that attracts the curious, history buffs and families in search of culture.

Picture-postcard villages and landscapes

The Dordogne is also an authentic countryside, where winding rivers, wooded hills, limestone cliffs and deep forests create dreamlike landscapes.

  • Villages ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages in France: La Roque-Gageac, Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle...
  • Canoe trips, hikes and bike rides to explore the Dordogne and Vézère valleys
  • Colourful markets, golden stone houses and a peaceful, welcoming atmosphere

Generous, renowned south-western gastronomy

It's impossible to talk about the Dordogne without mentioning its cuisine:

  • Foie gras, duck breast, confits, black truffles, Périgord walnuts, ceps, farmhouse cheeses, etc.
  • Monbazillac, Pécharmant or Bergerac wines to accompany your meals
  • Gourmet restaurants, farmers' markets, farm inns, gastronomic routes...

A region where people eat well, often and with passion.

A gentle, unspoilt environment

The Dordogne also attracts visitors for its relaxed pace of life, affordable cost of living, lively villages and connection to nature. With its four Périgords (black, green, white and purple), each with its own identity, it offers a diversity of living environments, from the most forested to the most wine-growing.
